Health Insurance Marketplace

Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP)

The Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP) opened in the fall of 2013 and is now available online. The SHOP offers small businesses (up to 50 employees) and their employees choices when it comes to purchasing health insurance. Through the SHOP, employers can offer employees a variety of Qualified Health Plans (QHPs), and employees can choose the plan that fits their needs and their budget.

How the SHOP can help your small business:

  • Simplifying Choices - The SHOP provides side-by-side comparisons of Qualified Health Plans, their benefits, premiums and quality.
  • Expanding Employee Options - The SHOP enables you to offer your employees a choice of Qualified Health Plans from several insurers.
  • Preserving Employer Control - You are able to decide whether and when to participate in the SHOP. You will be able to choose your own level of contribution toward your employees’ coverage, and in 2015 you will be able make a single monthly payment via the SHOP rather than to multiple plans.
  • Access to Tax Benefits - The SHOP can save your business money by spreading insurers’ administrative costs across more employers. In addition, your business may be eligible for small business tax credits when you offer health coverage for your employees through the SHOP.
