Switch to a 5-Star Medicare Advantage Plan

SummaCare’s Medicare Advantage plans have been awarded a 5-star rating for 2023—creating a special opportunity for Medicare-eligible individuals.

What is a star rating?

Each year the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) evaluate Medicare Advantage plans on a 5-star scale. The annual quality ratings help consumers determine how well a health plan is performing in areas such as:

  • How satisfied members are with the health plan
  • How effectively the health plan assists its providers in prevention and detection of illnesses
  • How well the health plan maintains the overall well-being of its members
  • How quickly the health plan responds to the members’ needs in regards to receiving care and addressing members’ concerns, including appeals

Why is a plan’s star rating important?

CMS uses the star rating system to help Medicare shoppers find plans offering high-quality benefits and service.

5-Star Special Enrollment Period (SEP)

Because SummaCare’s Medicare Advantage plans have been awarded a 5-star rating for 2023, eligible shoppers may switch to a SummaCare Medicare Advantage plan anytime between December 8, 2022 and November 30, 2023.

Other Opportunities to Switch

Individuals who are still on Original Medicare may utilize the 5-Star Special Enrollment period to switch to a Medicare Advantage plan any time during the designated enrollment period. Enrollment is possible even if eligible shoppers chose to not select a Medicare Advantage plan during the Annual Enrollment Period or Open Enrollment Period.

How Often Can Medicare Members Switch

Medicare shoppers are only able to utilize a 5-Star Special Enrollment Period once during a plan year.

Can Plan Members Use the SEP Period to Choose a Different SummaCare Plan?

Yes. Members who are already enrolled in a SummaCare Medicare Advantage plan can utilize the SEP to switch to another SummaCare plan. For instance, members interested in making a plan change could switch from the Topaz (HMO) plan to the Jade (HMO) plan during the 5-Star SEP.

How Do I Enroll in a 5-Star SummaCare Medicare Advantage Plan?
