If you take medication regularly, it’s important to store it safely—especially when traveling. Medicines can lose their strength if they are exposed to too much heat, cold, moisture or light. Improper storage can make them less effective, or even unsafe to use.
Here are some helpful tips to keep your medication safe while you're away from home:

1. Keep Medicines Away from Heat

High temperatures can change the way medicine works. If you leave medicine in a hot car, near a sunny window or in a suitcase on the tarmac, it may not work as well.

🔹 Tip: Store medicine in your carry-on bag to avoid extreme temperatures in the cargo area of a plane.

2. Travel with Original Packaging

It may seem easier to put pills into a plastic bag or pill box—but original containers are best. They have important information like your name, the name of the medication and instructions for use.

🔹 Tip: Always pack medicine in its original container to avoid confusion or questions at airport security.

3. Bring Extra Medication

Travel plans don’t always go perfectly. You might have a delay, cancelation or need to stay longer than expected.

🔹 Tip: Pack enough medication for a few extra days, just in case.

4. Carry a Medication List

If your medication is lost or damaged, a list of your prescriptions can be very helpful.

🔹 Tip: Write down the names, doses and times you take each medication. Keep a copy in your wallet or in your phone.

5. Know the Rules for Liquids

If you take liquid medications, keep them in the original bottles and place them in a clear plastic bag. TSA allows liquid medications, but you may need a provider's note or prescription label.

🔹 Tip: Keep liquid medications in their original bottles and place them in a clear plastic bag for easier screening.

6. Store Medicines Safely Around Children

If you're traveling with children, be careful where you keep your medications.

🔹 Tip: Store medicine in a locked bag or out of reach to prevent accidental use that can cause illness or worse.

7. Adjust for Time Zone Changes

Some medications need to be taken at the same time every day. Traveling across time zones can make this confusing.

🔹 Tip: Set a phone reminder that matches your usual schedule, or ask your provider how to adjust your medication times safely.

In Summary:

Storing and packing your medication the proper way helps ensure that safety and effectiveness are maintained. A few simple steps can protect your health and make your trip go more smoothly. If you have any questions before traveling, talk to your provider or pharmacist—they’re very knowledgeable and happy to help make sure you and your medications stay safe as you travel!
