February is Heart Health Month, a perfect time to focus on the habits and health measures that keep your heart strong—not just this month, but all year long.

One of the most important steps you can take for heart health is understanding your blood pressure numbers. High blood pressure is often called the “silent killer” because it typically has no noticeable symptoms, yet it significantly increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. Knowing your numbers—and taking action when needed—can make a lifesaving difference.

Why Blood Pressure Matters

When blood pressure is consistently high, it puts extra strain on your heart and blood vessels. Over time, this strain can lead to coronary artery disease (CAD), the most common type of heart disease. CAD occurs when blood flow to the heart is reduced, forcing the heart to work harder to supply oxygen and nutrients to the body.

Everyday Steps to Protect Your Heart

The good news? Many of the most effective ways to reduce your risk of CAD are within your control. To support heart health:

  • Engage in daily physical activity, even moderate movement like walking
  • Choose heart-healthy meals and beverages
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Avoid smoking (or seek support to quit if you currently smoke)
  • Visit your Primary Care Provider (PCP) regularly to monitor blood pressure and other heart-related health factors, as recommended

These lifestyle choices work together to protect your heart and improve overall well-being.

Heart-Healthy Meals for the Day

Nutrition plays a powerful role in heart health. To help you get started, here are three heart-healthy recipes—perfect for breakfast, lunch and dinner—courtesy of the American Heart Association:
